 Bucking the trend of denominational decline, Assemblies of God churches continue to grow in membership, according to the latest report.
For an astounding 19th year in a row, the number of people who consider themselves Assemblies of God (AG) adherents increased—this year to more than 2.8 followers, marking a 1.3 percent rise. The news comes on the heels of a recent nationwide study that found most mainline groups—including Southern Baptists, Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, Presbyterians and Lutherans—in decline.
"The increase by more than 1 percent is significant," said statistician Sherri Doty, who contributed to the denomination's Annual Church Ministries Report. "The U.S. population grows by about 1 percent a year, [so] this is an indication that we are growing faster than the population. And in light of the steady declines in attendance by other religious organizations over the past years, this is encouraging news."
Weekly church attendance among AG churches grew by 1.6 percent, while baptisms grew 0.5 percent. The report also indicated, however, that fewer non-Christians were committing their lives to Christ at an AG church.
"We are grateful for another year of growth as we continue to focus on prayer, church planting and revitalization, pastoral leadership training and enhanced local ministry resources," states General Secretary James Bradford.  [11.11.08] During prime time viewing last Thursday night, millions of Brazilians watched their TV screens transfixed as their national sports hero talked intimately about his hope and faith in Jesus Christ.
Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, a world-renowned midfielder who plays for a premier club in Italy and on the Brazilian national team during World Cups, played a lead role in kicking off “Minha Esperança Brasil,” My Hope Brazil—a three-night, TV-based outreach sponsored by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) and reportedly one of the largest evangelistic crusades ever.
“I truly cannot imagine my life without Christ,” said Kaká on national TV, as translated from the Portuguese language by Brazilian BGEA representatives.
“Everything I’ve accomplished, everything that God has done in my life … was because God has a plan and purpose for my life,” he said. “The Bible says that he will do more than we ever thought or imagined, and this is truly how it has been. If God wasn’t in my life, then my life certainly would not be like this.”
BGEA organizers praised Brazilian believers for networking nearly 50,000 churches nationwide to participate in the initiative and for providing more than 850,000 homes to host the evangelism effort on their TV sets.
Ministry leaders said Christians involved at the local level, or “Matthews,” were trained to share their own testimonies after the TV program and invite others to accept Christ.
“The churches in Brazil have put an enormous amount of time and energy into reaching their loved ones with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Bill Conard, vice president of international ministries at BGEA.

This week I interviewed two people who were raised from the dead during an evangelistic meeting in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
 During my 26 years as a journalist I’ve interviewed some interesting people and heard some amazing stories. But this week set a new standard when I met two people in southern India who experienced biblical-style resurrection.
Six-year-old Jyothi Pothabathula looks like a typical girl from Andhra Pradesh, a state in southern India. She has wide brown eyes, mocha-colored skin, slick dark hair and a shy smile. When I asked her who brought her back to life when she was 2 years old, she demurely answered, “Jesus,” in her native Telugu language.
